A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
